A Vision for Tejano’s Future
Event planner and coordinator Bino Gaona shared his thoughts on this historic move:
“We continue to represent our genre of music to the world. Our music will continue into the future as we introduce our music to the younger generation.” He added, “Leaving San Antonio and taking the Tejano Music Awards to the Houston area for the first time – we made a decision and it paid off.”
Beyond the performances, this year’s event marks a turning point for Tejano music – a genre rooted in tradition yet evolving with fresh energy and creativity. Houston is ready to make history, and you’re invited to be part of it.

A New Era Beyond San Antonio
For nearly fifty years, San Antonio has hosted the Tejano Music Awards—but 2024 marks a bold new chapter. The event’s relocation to the Houston area is part of a strategic effort to reignite the prestige and excitement that once defined Texas’ biggest night in Tejano music.
Longtime event organizer Bino Gaona explains that remaining in San Antonio was no longer viable. “If we stayed one more year, the show might not have survived,” he said. After several failed relocation attempts in the past, Houston finally became the answer.
A Full Night of Music, Fans, and Celebration
Festivities launch at 4 p.m. with a vibrant outdoor red carpet and fan zone at Texas Rodeo Saloon in Katy. Inside, the awards ceremony unfolds with performances, presentations, and a high-energy after-party and dance to close out the night.
Tejano’s Rich Roots Run Through Houston
Tejano music—born in Texas and shaped by a blend of Mexican and American sounds—has always represented cultural fusion. Accordion-driven melodies, brass instrumentation, and heartfelt vocals have connected generations for decades.
Houston’s Tejano legacy is undisputed:
- Lydia Mendoza, the “First Lady of Tejano Music,” called Houston home.
- La Mafia, one of the most influential Grammy-winning Tejano groups, revolutionized the sound from this city.
- Selena’s legendary 1995 Astrodome performance remains one of the most iconic cultural moments in Texas history.
But after its ’90s peak, the genre struggled to maintain mainstream traction.
A Call for Evolution and Fresh Energy
Houston-based performer David Olivarez believes the key to Tejano’s revival is modernizing the experience. “Fans want a show,” he said. “They don’t want someone standing still—they want style, energy, performance.”
He notes that younger audiences crave dynamic, visually captivating presentations, similar to what Selena introduced decades ago.

Houston Responds With Enthusiasm
Early response to the relocation has been staggering. Event tables sold out in just 72 hours—before a single artist was publicly announced. General admission tickets continue to surpass expectations, far outperforming last year’s numbers in San Antonio.
“To me, this proves that Houston still loves Tejano — not just the music, but the culture,” Gaona said. “People are excited again.”
A Promising Revival for a Beloved Genre
Organizers hope that unveiling the awards in Houston sets the stage for a revitalization of Tejano music as a whole. With renewed energy, record-breaking ticket sales, and a city rich in Tejano history, the 45th Annual Tejano Music Awards may signal the rebirth the genre has long awaited.
