Houston Soccer Day

Houston’s soccer story isn’t written by a single club, league, or generation. It’s built block by block, field by field, and voice by voice. That truth came into full focus inside the Legacy Room at Houston City Hall as leaders from every corner of the sport gathered for Houston Soccer Day – a city‑recognized celebration rooted in the grassroots foundation of the game.

Proclaimed officially by Mayor John Whitmire, Houston Soccer Day (April 7) united a dynamic mix of respected local icons, former and current professional players, media leaders, community advocates, youth organizations, fan clubs, nonprofit partners, and industry professionals. From former MLS standouts Eddie Robinson and Bobby Boswell, to Glenn Davis, widely known as The Voice of Soccer, to representatives from Texas Special Olympics, the room reflected the full spectrum of Houston’s soccer ecosystem.

Designed to bring the entire soccer community under one roof, Houston Soccer Day wasn’t simply a ceremony, it was a living snapshot of a city that continues to grow the game together.

“Houston Soccer Day was about connection, it was about unity,” said Elva Trevino, Founder of Champions Club Agency and producer of the event. “It was all about getting all of the generations of fútbol and soccer together, no matter the country or the generation you came from – saying we are Houston as one Soccer City.”

A Bottom‑Up Soccer City

Hosted in partnership with city leadership, including Council Member Joaquin Martinez, the April 7 event honored both the everyday builders of the sport and the recognizable figures who have shaped Houston’s soccer identity over decades. High school athletic directors stood alongside youth coaches, referees, supporters’ groups, club owners, media voices, and lifelong advocates – reinforcing a simple truth: Houston soccer is powered from the ground up.

That sentiment resonated deeply with Glenn Davis, whose voice has narrated generations of the game.

“Connection, community, and game changers,” Davis said. “Houston Soccer Day was an amazing reminder of our powerful soccer culture and the ownership of it by those that play, coach, referee, organize, support, own, report on, and mentor the game. This is the bottom‑up power and strength of our soccer community.”

Honoring the Builders

During the April 7 program, a select group of 28 Houston‑area individuals and organizers were formally recognized for their contributions, including Jim Walker, general manager of the Houston Dynamos in the 1980s, and Josh Gardner, a Houston native who went on to play professionally in MLS.

While individual honors were meaningful, the broader recognition was just as intentional. Houston Soccer Day acknowledged the wider circle of leaders whose continued work sustains and grows the sport across neighborhoods, schools, leagues, and cultures.

Produced by Champions Club Agency, the gathering reflected a long‑term vision: strengthening Houston’s soccer ecosystem by bringing diverse leaders into conversation, collaboration, and shared momentum for the future.

Legacy Meets the Next Generation

For organizations deeply invested in youth development and community impact, Houston Soccer Day carried special meaning.

“At Katy Elite Athletics, we see Houston Soccer Day as more than a celebration, it’s a reflection of legacy, resilience, and vision,” said William Escobar, President and Owner of Katy Elite Athletics.  “The pioneers we honored didn’t just grow the game; they built a culture and a community that continues to shape lives across our city. It’s a privilege to recognize their impact while carrying that responsibility forward, creating spaces, opportunities, and pathways for the next generation to thrive both on and off the field.”

That generational bridge, honoring the past while building the future, was the heartbeat of the day.

A Moment of Unity, A Movement Forward

Houston Soccer Day served as a moment of unity, reflection, and forward momentum. More than a single date on the calendar, it marked a renewed commitment to collaboration as Houston continues to expand its footprint in the global game.

Because in Houston, soccer isn’t owned by one voice, it’s shared by many. And together, those voices are ensuring the city’s soccer story continues to grow stronger, louder, and more unified than ever before.
