Actor and Stand-up Comedian, Faiza Saleem tied the knot these past few days and is making headlines for actually enjoying her wedding. Wait, what?
Faiza said, “As women we are expected not to be happy at our wedding. But why not? I’m marrying the love of my life… everyone who matters is happy for me or should be happy for me. Then why should I let nobodies dictate when, where and how I should express my emotions? If someone doesn’t like it, then too bad too sad.”
While it sounds absurd, it’s still an expectation that the South Asian bride, at the most happiest moment of their life, cannot laugh too much, talk too much, keep her eyes down, look lighter than the groom, absurd right? Unfortunately, the list goes on and while it sounds like a thing of the past, these expectations are still in full effect for the South Asian bride.
Faiza’s instagram posts are a breath of fresh air and reminder that all brides should focus on their own happiness during their wedding.
